Last updated 31st March, 2022

Poker is a game enjoyed the world over, and almost everyone will be familiar with sitting down to play at home, whether that be at the dining table, in the man cave, or even out in the garden shed! Enjoyed thanks to the unique mix of maths, psychology and luck involved, poker has experienced a new ‘boom’ in recent years so there’s no better time to buy a poker table.

Our team of poker sharks have spent many an hour researching the best tables with legs (as opposed to table toppers that you place on existing tables), and we’ve reviewed the top 8 below, all supplied by trusted retailers and approved by us. To help you choose the best poker table for your needs, we have also included a comprehensive buying guide covering features to consider before purchasing.

But before jumping, there’s a question we hear a lot...

How do I choose a poker table?

There are five things to consider when buying a poker table: how many people you plan to play with, which poker games you play, whether you need a foldable table, what you want the table to look like, and what level of finish you require. While this may sound daunting, our buying guide below breaks down what to look for when asking yourself each of these questions and makes it easy to home in on the best poker table for you.

Buying Guide

When you start searching for the perfect poker table, the range of options can be overwhelming. However, we’ve done the hard work for you by laying out the key questions to ask yourself in order to make an informed decision.

Size and shape of the table

When buying a poker table, it is imperative that you consider who are going to be the main users of the table and how they will be using it. Poker tables generally seat from six to ten people and can come in a range of shapes including circular, hexagonal and oval. Circular and hexagonal tables on the market are designed for six to eight people, can be as small as 120cm in diameter, and are generally priced more modestly. Tables of the more traditional oval shape, that will be familiar to casino and tournament players, are designed to seat nine or ten players. However, these tables are often over 2m long, so you need to be sure you have space to accommodate them, and they usually command a more premium price tag.

It is important to remember that you will also need ample space for chairs around the table to ensure a comfortable experience for your guests. Think about where these chairs will come from and if they will match the style of your table – if you have bought a foldable table then it may be worth buying foldable chairs to help with storage.

Foldability

A key question to ask yourself is ‘are you going to be putting your poker table away after use?’. When space is at a premium in your man cave, it will probably make sense to purchase a foldable table, as this allows you more flexibility. There is an array of great foldable poker tables available which can be conveniently stored, while not having to compromise on quality. However, if you frequently play poker and other card games and want to make a designated space for when you get the gang together then permanent tables provide extra stability and generally a higher quality of finish more akin to professional casino tables.

Gameplay

If you have a specific type of poker you prefer to play, then you may appreciate having a specific table format. If you play games which involve community cards like Texas Hold’em or Pot-Limit Omaha, then you may want to have boxes marked for these. However, if you spend more time playing Seven-card Stud then this will be of little importance. A lot of people will rotate dealers during gameplay, but if you prefer to have an allocated dealer then it makes sense to invest in a table which includes a dealer position. The dealer position usually has an integrated chip tray and is positioned centrally so that they can easily reach all players when dealing. Both the dealer and the players will appreciate the increased efficiency of play with this feature. Not to mention the fact that it helps to recreate the true croupier experience!

Design & Aesthetic

Specific design features of your table can take it from a good poker table to the perfect table for your man cave. Firstly, you need to consider the aesthetic. There are plenty of poker tables on offer, with a vast array of colours and styles available. If you are someone who takes pride in the appearance of your space, it is important to ensure that your table is going to be coordinated with its surroundings and bring the full casino vibe to the room.

The rail/racetrack is an essential part of the table for holding chips, and the edge can often double as a betting line. Make sure that the rail is of suitable quality and is in keeping with the look you are after. Drinks holders can be important for those who like to stay ‘hydrated’ during an extended game, and it is worth checking whether the holders on offer are large enough to accommodate a pint glass, as this is often not the case on American tables.

Quality

Both the quality of the playing surface and the structure of your table will have a huge impact on the enjoyment of your poker session for you and your opponents. The surface should allow the cards to glide smoothly across the surface. Nobody wants their cards getting caught up on a rough surface and stopping short, or even worse flipping over! Many people refer to the material covering the table as ‘felt’, however this is only true on cheap tables as felt very quickly creates lint which leads to a rough surface. Most good quality poker tables are covered with ‘speed cloth’, a composite material which provides both smoothness and durability. Scotch guard should also be added to the speed cloth to allow some liquid repellence for unwanted spills.

Underneath the speed cloth, a thin layer of foam can make it much easier to pick up cards and gives the table the feel of a professional poker table. Structurally, most poker tables on offer are constructed from MDF, with legs on foldable poker tables usually constructed from lightweight steel alloys. For stability and durability, it is worth ensuring that the table is constructed from large pieces of MDF of a good thickness, rather than many smaller parts. Solid rubber grips on the base of legs help to reduce slipping.

Alternatives to buying a poker table

Tabletop and roll-up poker tables

If you don’t have space for a poker table but you have a table that you frequently use for poker, you have two more options to spice up your poker evenings. You could invest in a tabletop table, which fits over the top of your existing table when required and can include many of the key features mentioned above. The alternative is a more budget option, a rollup table cover which you can lay across your tabletop when your friends are around to provide some basic structure to your poker sessions. How to create your own unique poker table

For those poker aficionados who really want to impress their competitors, a custom-made poker table is a great option and can really add the ‘wow’ factor to your man cave. Your guests will realise they are playing against an expert, and you will soon be dominating the game! There are two ways you can do this. The easy (and more expensive) way is to have a table custom-made for you by the experts.
